What Is Freemasonry?
If you've found your way to my book, it's possible that you are interested in Freemasonry.
Freemasonry is an institution that he been around in its current guise for over 300 years. Although many people believe its origins date back much further.
Today it's a vehicle for like-minded people to get together on a regular basis to socialise, raise money for good causes, learn more about and improve
themselves.
There are men's Masonic organisations around the world and women's Masonic organisations in many places too. There are also organisations for both
men and women jointly that follow a structure similar to Freemasonry but not quite the same.
Why become a Mason?
People join Freemasonry for many reasons; Following family members. To be with friends or colleagues. Historical interest. Interest in the 'mystery'. Seeking to better themselves. To raise money for charity. As a social circle, and many more.
If you ask someone why they joined it is likely a combination of several of the reasons above. If you ask someone why they stay it will likely be for one
reason - friendship.
Above all Freemasonry is about friendship. It's about meeting like-minded people from all walks of life on an equal level. We are naturally social animals.
These days it can be very difficult to meet people without wondering if there is some hidden agenda or without there being some social hierarchy
involved. As Masons, we are all equal - a Brotherhood of Men and Women under the Fatherhood of God.
How Do I Become a Freemason?
So you're interested in Freemasonry and want to know what to do next.
The easiest way is to know someone who is a Mason and approach them, but that's not always easy. Many Masons prefer to keep their membership
personal, for fear or objection from those who don't understand what Freemasonry is about.
If you don't know someone, the next best way is to make contact with the Grand Lodge in your area. In England and Wales this is the United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE). For places like the US, each State has its own Grand Lodge. In other parts of the World, there will be a Grand Lodge of some sort - either independent or affiliated with UGLE.
If you trouble finding your nearest Masonic organisation, get in touch and I'll see what I can find out.
